An event to honor and celebrate the life of Elmer G. Gilbert will take place on Saturday, September 14, 2019 in Boeing Auditorium, François-Xavier Bagnoud Aerospace Building (1320 Beal Avenue), University of Michigan, with a morning symposium highlighting his contributions past and future, and an afternoon program of personal memories and celebration. Please see a tentative program and lodging information below. The public is welcome to attend the morning and/or afternoon portions of the event.

Transportation from DTW to Ann Arbor

Metro Cars & Metro Cab
There are a few private taxi services located at either terminal. Rides can be reserved in advance:

Instructions: Follow signs to the Ground Transportation center in either terminal. If you did not reserve in advance, there are kiosks at the center that can help you.
Estimated cost: $80 one way
Lyft & Uber
Both Lyft and Uber pick up at either terminal and drop off at the hotel of your choosing. You will need the appropriate app on your phone (Lyft or Uber) to call a car.
Instructions: Follow signs to the Ground Transportation – Rideshare center at either terminal. At McNamara, the Rideshare pickup is on Level 4. At North, the Rideshare pickup is on Level 1.
Estimated Cost: $40 one way (depending on time of day and hotel location)

Rental Car
We recommend renting from one of the agencies located at DTW:

Instructions: From either terminal, follow signs in the airport for Ground Transportation and take a courtesy shuttle to the rental car campus, located at the Northeast corner of the airport along Lucas Drive
Estimated Cost: depends on length of stay
Directions: The employees at the rental car service can help you find the correct road (either W G Rogell Dr. or Middlebelt Rd, depending on your location) that leads to I-94W. Once on either W G Rogell Dr or Middlebelt, follow signs for 94-W toward Chicago. Merge onto 94W.

 

Bell Tower Hotel @ 300 S. Thayer St. (26 miles – 36 min)
Drive 21.2 miles on 94-W, then take exit 177 toward State St. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto State St. Drive 2.8 mi on State St, then turn right onto N. University Ave (the first road after you pass by the main campus). Take the first left onto S. Thayer St, and the Bell Tower Hotel will be on your left in 200 ft.

Holiday Inn @ 3600 Plymouth Rd (26 miles – 31 min)
Drive 18 miles on 94-W to exit 180B for 23-N toward Ann Arbor. Drive 6 mi on 23-N, then take exit 41 for Plymouth Rd. Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Plymouth Rd. Cross back over the highway on the bridge overpass and you will see the hotel on the left. Hotel shares a driveway with BP gas station. Turn left into driveway and follow all the way back.

Residence Inn by Marriott Ann Arbor North @ 3535 Green Ct. (26 miles – 32 min)
Drive 18 miles on 94-W to exit 180B for 23-N toward Ann Arbor. Drive 6 mi on 23-N, then take exit 41 for Plymouth Rd. Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Plymouth Rd. Drive 0.4 mi, then take a left at Green Rd (the first major intersection on Plymouth). Take the left immediately after the Busch’s parking lot (the 3rd left after turning onto Green) and drive straight for 400 ft.

The Graduate @ 615 E Huron St (26 miles – 36 min)
Drive 18 miles on 94-W to exit 180B for 23-N toward Ann Arbor. Drive 2.4 mi on 23-N, then take exit 37B for Ann Arbor/US-23 BUS. The ramp will merge onto Washtenaw Ave going west. Drive on Washtenaw for 1.4 mi, then use the far right lane to stay on Washtenaw for another 2 mi. After 2 mi, you will go around a large bend in the road and Washtenaw will become E Huron St. Drive 0.2 mi, and then The Graduate is on your right immediately after you cross State St. There is a large fountain outside the entrance.
