Shiyao Lin Awarded the 2021 AIAA Harry H. and Lois G. Hilton Student Paper Award

U-M Aerospace Engineering PhD student Shiyao Lin won the 2021 AIAA Harry H. and Lois G. Hilton Student Paper Award in Structures from the 2021 AIAA SciTech Forum and Exposition for his paper “A Comprehensive Experimental and Computational Study on LVI induced Damage of Laminated Composites.”

Shiyao Lin, a fourth-year PhD student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, received the 2021 AIAA Student Paper Award for his research paper on the impact damage of composite materials. Lin has been studying impact damage mechanisms through impact testing and computational modeling in the Composite Structures Lab under the advisorship of Professor Anthony Waas.

In the lab, he conducted both impact tests utilizing drop tower testing, ultrasound scanning, micro-CT scanning, and observation with high-speed cameras, and post-impact compression tests. In addition, Lin developed a high-fidelity and high-efficiency computational framework in the commercial software, Abaqus, to predict impact damage patterns and implement the damage model, the Enhanced Schapery Theory (EST). EST was originally proposed and developed by Professor Waas and has been developed by the Waas group during a ten-year process. The computation framework could decrease computation time by around 70% without sacrificing computational accuracy.   

Lin received his undergraduate degree and master degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology with a major in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. He is in his fourth year of the University of Michigan Aerospace Engineering PhD program.
