Anthony Waas, Richard A. Auhll Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering

Greetings and Welcome to the University of Michigan Department of Aerospace Engineering. If you are looking for the leaders and best in the field of aeronautics and space, you have come to the right place. I have the great pleasure of chairing the very first aeronautical degree-granting program in the nation. Since 1914, more than 6,000 alumni have impacted the world for good and continue to do so today. You can learn more about the history of our Department on our History page.

Our undergraduate and graduate aerospace engineering programs rank within the top five in the nation with US News & World Report. With our award winning students, student teams, and faculty researchers, Michigan Aerospace will inevitably play a big role in autonomy, high-speed vehicles and commercial space, which will shape the future of aerospace. Our Department continues to learn and to grow a diverse community of faculty, students and staff. Many of our students serve on several Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) student committees as well as our Department level DEI committee with faculty and staff members. We feel it is of utmost importance to hear the voices of our students and empower them to be advocates of change inside and outside of the classroom.

Please continue to explore our website to learn more about our Mission and Research. In addition, do not be a stranger! You can always see what we are up to by visiting our News Center. If you do not have time to visit, consider subscribing to our newsletter.

As always stay safe and Go BLUE!

PAST STATEMENTS FROM THE CHAIR

Freedom of Speech Support (June 19, 2020)

We value the rights of our incoming students to exercise their voices. We support our students who engage in lawful protests and use their voices to speak out against racism. Freedom of speech is a bedrock principle of our community and your admission to U-M is not jeopardized by your participation in lawful protests or exercising your constitutional rights.

Please know that you are not alone … the Department of Aerospace Engineering at U-M is with you as we work together to eradicate systemic racism in our society. Below is a short list of resources and expressions from U-M faculty, staff, and students to help support our community through these unprecedented times.

Time for Change—George Floyd (June 2, 2020)

Last week, I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd. My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the Floyd, Arbery, and Taylor families during these most difficult times.

There are too many examples in our country’s history of our police force treating people of color unequally. The pattern of racial discrimination, brutality, and fatal violence against black people must stop.

Our Chief Diversity Officer, Robert Sellers, has first-hand experience and openly shares his personal journey here. I firmly align myself with our university leaders who call on all of us to act on our scholarship and the education of our innovative faculty, students, and staff, to bring about change not just within the university, but in our broader society.

The only way to build a strong and inclusive aerospace community is to treat all people with dignity and respect, and listen to their unique, diverse perspectives. The department’s DEI and Outreach committees are moving forward with unwavering resolve to ensure that our department is welcoming and inclusive. These beliefs are central to our College values as well. My colleagues Robert Scott, Project Manager for Special Diversity Initiatives, and Sara Pozzi, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, co-wrote an article that shows steps we can all take to the fight against racism.

Please visit our Aerospace Engineering DEI Resources for a list of student, faculty, and staff diversity, equity, and inclusion resources. Additionally, there are many University resources available to anyone in need of support at this time; I urge you to use them. Engineering students can receive support through the Michigan Engineering CARE Center or U-M Counseling and Psychological Services. All faculty and staff can access services through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office.

Dear community, it is time for change. Please know that you are not alone … I am with you as we work together to eradicate racism in our society.

—Tony Waas, Department Chair
