Catherine Philpott has been recognized as an outstanding student with the Arlen R. Hellwarth Prize from the College of Engineering. The prize is presented to two undergraduate student leaders who have made valuable contributions to their college and community. As president of Women in Aeronautics and Astronautics (WAA) and External Vice President of the nationally renowned honor society for Aerospace Engineering, Sigma Gamma Tau, Catherine has made a significant impact on the undergraduate student body. She has been a strong advocate for the students of aerospace engineering by frequently communicating students’ needs to the department to improve the undergraduate aerospace experience. As a U-M Aerospace Department Representative, she has also helped assist the department’s transition to virtual learning. Additionally, through her efforts with WAA, she has created an inclusive and welcoming community for students in aerospace by raising awareness for diversity in engineering.

The Arlen R. Hellwarth Prize was established in honor of Arlen R. Hellwarth, who made a positive impact on the College of Engineering as a professor and as the Associate Dean and Secretary of the College of Engineering. The College of Engineering Arlen R. Hellwarth Award is presented to undergraduate students who emulate Hellwarth’s compassion and have created positive change in the College and University.

It’s an incredible honor to be receiving the Arlen R. Hellwarth award and especially since the nomination came from my professors. I would not have been able to make the contributions to the Aerospace Department and to the College of Engineering without the support and encouragement that I’ve had. It’s very special to be recognized for what I’ve been able to do over the last few years.

In addition to her involvement in WAA and SGT, Catherine is a member of MVFT. She is majoring in Aerospace and minoring in Computer Science with plans to graduate in 2021.
