They have been chosen for this scholarship for their extraordinary contributions to excellence at the College of Engineering through their research on N95 masks in response to the mask shortage at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mirko Gamba, Professor of Aerospace Engineering

Gamba was part of the team who conducted tests to evaluate the durability of the N95 masks following disinfection processing. The tests were designed to measure the filtration efficiency of disinfected masks by firing an air stream of fine particles at the mask in an air tunnel and taking measurement of particle size distribution penetrating the mask. As a result, the team’s testing provided timely insights on the effectiveness of mask disinfection as a first solution to mask shortage experienced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College of Engineering is proud to honor the N95 Reprocessing Team with this scholarship to continue their research.

Mirko Gamba is an Associate Professor in the University of Michigan Department of Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses on fundamental research in a diverse range of advanced and sustainable application concepts for propulsion and energy conversion systems.
