Aerospace Engineering’s Assistant Professor Gökçin Çinar won the best paper award at the ITEC+EATS conference for her “Modeling and Simulation of a Parallel Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft for the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) Program.”

The research was funded by the NASA Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project, which conducts ground and flight tests of electrified air propulsion (EAP) technologies to introduce a new generation of electric-powered aircrafts. The project hopes to introduce EAP-based vision systems to the US fleet no later than 2035.

Çinar, an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan since January 2022, conducted this research at Georgia Tech in collaboration with her co-authors. The research presents a parametric modeling and integrated sizing approach for a charge-depleting parallel hybrid electric aircraft. Cinar led a team of research engineers and graduate students research assistants to set forth the modeling and simulation of a parallel hybrid electric aircraft using the multidisciplinary analysis and optimization environment, E-PASS, a software Cinar built as part of her PhD thesis which has enabled various research projects at Georgia Tech funded by the government and industry.

As Çinar put it, “The main novelty of this work is the integration of the operational analysis within the mission analysis at the aircraft design stage. The parametric nature of these models enable trade studies between different power management strategies and the aircraft design and mission performance metrics.”

NASA shared this news on their social media accounts.

Çinar is also an organizing committee member at the AIAA/IEEE Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium (EATS). This year, she served as the Technical Program Chair at EATS and was the Publication Co-Chairs of ITEC+EATS. She also hosted and moderated the“Electrified Flight Development Programs” panel, which is dedicated to highlighting the innovators and companies that have truly advanced the dream for hybrid aircrafts. Next year, she’ll be serving as the General Co-Chair of the conference, which will be organized jointly with the AIAA Aviation Forum.
