Admissions / Declaring

FXB atrium lit by golden sunlight

First-year students are not admitted directly to the Aerospace Engineering Department but to the University of Michigan and the College of Engineering. Students declare a major, typically in their second or third semester at Michigan.  Students declaring Aerospace Engineering as their major are assigned a faculty advisor in the Department.

Information on admission for first-year students, transfer students and international students is available on the website of the College of Engineering Admissions Office, or contact Linda Weiss, 3054-A FXB, 734-764-3310.

Declaring Aerospace Engineering

Students can declare Aerospace Engineering if they:

  1. Have completed at least one full term of courses on the U-M Ann Arbor campus.
  2. Have an overall U-M GPA of 2.0 or better in courses taken at the U-M Ann Arbor campus and are in good standing.
  3. Have completed or earned credit by exam or transfer for one or more courses in each of these categories:
  • Calculus (e.g. Math 115, 116, 156)
  • Calculus-based physics course (e.g. Physics 140, 160) or chemistry course (e.g. Chemistry 130)
  • Required engineering courses (ENGR 100, 101 or 151)

Students interested in Aerospace Engineering are welcome to contact Linda Weiss (lweiss@umich.edu) in the Aerospace Engineering advising office to discuss their interests.
