Biography

Henry A. Sodano is a Professor at the University of Michigan with appointments in the Materials Science and Engineering and Macromolecular Science and Engineering Departments. His research lies in advanced aerospace materials with focus on composite materials, multifunctional materials, additive manufacturing, ceramics and nanotechnology. His laboratory uses a cross-disciplinary approach to enable rapid advancement in the current state of the art of advanced materials and structures.

He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2005, his M.S. in 2003 and his B.S in 2002 also from Virginia Tech. He was an Assistant professor at Michigan Technological University from 2005-2007 and Arizona State University from 2007-2010 before promotion to Associate Professor in 2010. In 2011, he moved to the University of Florida where he was jointly appointed as an Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering departments, receiving promotion to Full Professor in 2015. He has published 195 technical articles (6 book chapters, 96 refereed journals published or submitted and 92 proceedings) and made over 100 national and international presentations including 45 invited and his selection for a presentation at the National Academy’s 2008 German-American Frontiers of Engineering Symposium for outstanding early-career German and American Engineers. He currently serves as an associate editor of Smart Materials and Structures, the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, the Journal of Multifunctional Composites and the International Journal of Smart and Nano Materials and is a regular reviewer for more than 40 international journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Applied Physics Letters, etc. He was awarded the NSF CAREER award in 2009, the 2012 American Society of Composites Young Researcher Award, the ASME Gary Anderson Award for Early Career Achievement in 2009, Virginia Tech’s 2010 Outstanding Recent Alumni Award, Arizona State University’s 2009 Faculty Achievement Award in Research Excellence, a NASA Tech Brief Award in 2010 and 2014, and was inducted into Virginia Tech’s Academy of Engineering Excellence in 2010. He is a member of ASME, AIAA, MRS, ASC, SPIE and SAMPE.
